Do you ever have those moments when in bed, before falling asleep, your mind starts to fly away and recall tons of memories and thoughts?
No, cause I do, beside when I'm exhausted and pass out a second after have touched the pillow, and yesterday I had one of those moments.
In particular, for some reason, I recalled a trip I took when I was 17, which is stored in my brain as one of the best memories of my entire life.
It was december 2002 and I was living in a small town near Malmö, Sweden, as part of an exchange student's program.
I had been invited by a friend of mine to spend the new year together, he was also an exchanged student and lived in a town called Östersund, far norther.
But that didn't discourage me, quite the opposite, I was very much thrilled to get as North as I had never been before.
The only alternative for me to get up there was to take a night train that took me from Lund all the way up to Jämtland, stopping in a lot of towns under way, making of that one of the best trip of my entire life.
I sat alone, for something like 15 hours, not sleeping a single minute, and gazing the entire trip out of the train window.
I stared at lone light poles that illuminated with their light beams portions of snowflakes that silently fell down, I waited in suspence when approaching Stockholm for the first time and stared in admiration at its beautiful lights and illuminated buildings covered in snow, and I didn't stop staring out of the window neither when the landscape changed into infinite woods from which you could glance at the bright stars of the North and vaste white meadows up from which I always expected to catch the Northern lights.
Approaching to morning - and destination - I went to get some breakfast in the restaurant wagon and chatted a while with a finnish guy that explained to me how - mostly in the past - people could cross the northern part of the iced gulf of Bothnia by car. I remained speachless in suprise!
Reached destination, I had a fantastic time with my friend, filled with national chats, weird accidents, UFO sights, and we had the pleasure to spend New Year's Eve in a bus trying to reach a party...
Have you ever been to Jämtland? Östersund is a nice little town, and near you have Åre, which is probably the top skiing destination in Sweden, and truly skii worthy, even to a Alps native like me :)
Unfortunately I have no pics to share beside the first one. In those days (God I'm old..!!) I printed most of the pics and didn't save the files, and the photos are stored God know where...
Tomorrow I'm off to London with my girlfriends, I hope to post soon again!
